A Major Upgrade To Our OnPoint API Service

A big upgrade to our OnPoint API service has rolled out. This refreshed weather API was thoughtfully designed to be backward compatible with the previous iteration of the OnPoint API.  There are several new features, and the removal of constraints that will greatly increase value and usability of the API.

Removal of Constraint

By far, the most requested enhancement to the OnPoint API was that we lift the “maximum 25 rows of data per request” limit. You have been heard! Queries are no longer limited to requests of 25 rows or less. You can now request of up to 1 year of data at a time using the “timestamp between” parameter. IMPORTANT: You will see significantly improved performance if you limit the “timestamp between” range to 1 month or less.

Added Features

  • Past weather data is now available back to 2007 for North America and 2000 Internationally.
  • A new OnPoint Climatology resource is available for all accounts with the “read_climatology” capability. Climatology is the statistics of weather over a period of time in the form of means and standard deviations. Climatology can be useful in two ways. The first allows one to compare weather to what should be ‘normal’ weather for a place and time. Weather parameters such as temperature, humidity, wind and precipitation can be differenced with climatology to get a ‘departure from normal’. The second use of climatology is as a long-range forecast.  Climatology gives a solid estimate of what to weather to expect for any location and any point in time.  Weather Source’s OnPoint Climatology supports nearly two million points globally with climatology information on hourly and daily increments.
  • A new Nowcast resource is available for all accounts with the “read_nowcast” capability. Nowcast is the current derived weather with global coverage and to-the-second precision.
  • Global lat/lon data (not just US data) is now available for all accounts with the “access_points” capability. Coverage is for all global landmasses (except Antarctica) and up to 200 miles offshore. The History, Forecast, Nowcast, Climatology, and Astronomy resources all have this regionally expanded capability.
  • Hourly and Daily weather forecasts are now available up to 10 days for both North America and International locations. This is increased from up to 7 days of forecast or 72 hours of forecast.
  • Support has been added for the following observations: Heat Index, Mean Sea Level Pressure, Solar Radiation, Wind Chill, 80m Wind Direction, 100m Wind Direction, 80m Wind Speed, and 100m Wind Speed.
  • Added convenience field groups (such as “all”, “allTemp”, “allPrecip”, and “popular”) that return logically related fields without having to exhaustively list them.

A New Website and a Renewed Focus

For years now, our focus at Weather Source has been on our B2B solutions. With the maturing of our OnPoint Weather product – which offers global hyper-local weather data that is quality-checked, error-corrected, and gap-filled – we are better positioned than ever to meet the B.I. needs of our corporate clients. Our OnPoint API is an enterprise-class means of data distribution trusted by small business and FORTUNE 50 companies alike.

But our old website was architected around a low-quality B2C report product that was far afield from the company we had become. Having loosed ourselves from that yolk, we feel a renewed vigor rising up – a rekindled passion for our core mission.

We already lead the industry in past, present and forecast weather data with our OnPoint Weather product. Imagine what we will do next!

If you are just hearing about us for the first time, check out our Why Weather Source? page.

Weather Source Is On the Move

Weather Source™ continues to move ahead like a category 5 hurricane with the release of not only a new website but also version 3 of its patent-pending OnPoint® Platform which now includes access to climatology data in both hourly and daily format!

As part of the new website release, Weather Source will no longer be offering Past Weather Reports effective as of March 19, 2017.

Since 2011, we have offered the Past Weather Reports to customers via the Weather Source online store. The Past Weather Reports included raw government data from government weather stations. This data had significant limitations with respect to the number of locations and quality of data (up to 25% of raw government data has significant gaps, anomalies and errors).

The Past Weather Reports were a service we enjoyed providing to our customers and we learned a lot from providing this service, but with the release of OnPoint V3, our focus is now exclusively on providing enterprise and business quality weather data and ensuring OnPoint Weather data is the best in the business.

When we first started offering the Past Weather Reports, raw government data was not commonly available. However, it is now available online, for free, from several other sites, including:

Similar to our Past Weather Reports, the data on these sites is raw and of limited geographic scope.

With OnPoint Weather, we now have a complete and comprehensive continuum of past, present, and forecast global weather history data for all landmasses, and extending over 200 miles offshore, dating back to the year 2000.  Further, all of OnPoint Weather data is quality-checked, error-corrected, and gap-filled so you can rest assured you are using data of the highest quality and accuracy.

With the release of version 3, the OnPoint Platform is now also able to generate climatology data for additional in-depth analysis and correlation. OnPoint Climatology allows businesses and enterprises the ability to compare weather to what should be ‘normal’ weather for any place and point in time. Weather parameters such as temperature, humidity, wind and precipitation can be differenced with climatology data to get a ‘departure from normal’ and climatology data can also as an accurate long-range forecast using mean and standard deviations.

OnPoint Weather is available in easy to use CSV files or on-demand via the OnPoint API with subscriptions starting at $600/month. With OnPoint Weather, you are able to harness the power of comprehensive, accurate, and hyper-local past, present and forecast global weather data.
